I was glad to see that the same jacket made it to sale and remained unsold at less than the original erroneous price.

That being said, even if they are smart investments, this is fucking insane. Seriously, paying a significant fee for a summer internship is just depressing. Having a bunch of motherfucking vultures move in and create an extortion racket between the people needing interns and the people needing to intern is horrible. And, it definitely creates an extra hurdle for the less well-off.
That being said, if you don't suck at life, finding an internship in college is still not very hard. So, I guess I kind of see this as vultures taking advantage of second rate college kids with too much money. I think i hate everyone involved, I'm probably an asshole.Originally posted by SombreResplendence View Post"Universities forget that they themselves, in essence, are businesses. Just because they're doing it in a nonprofit fashion doesn’t mean that those of us doing it for profit are doing it incorrectly."
I can't believe they compared their services to those offered at universities, as if to imply that one learns nothing at university. As someone who doesn't ass around completely in school, I very much resent that comment. I believe the comment is meant to compare only the career offices of universities to the exorbitantly priced services of these private companies, but it was phrased miserably.Originally posted by Faust View PostSaid in a true American capitalist manner. Everything is a business to those people. Education, health care, government, science, law enforcement.
1, I went to university twice and didn't graduate once. I can honestly say that when I left and began working, was when I started learning. So, I think that; yes, a private company can be equally relevant to a person’s education as a university. The biggest problems with universities are that (certainly in England) many of the lecturers are there because they can't cut it in the real world (Those who can do, those who can't, teach. - Oscar Wilde). Personally, I'd prefer to pay to learn from someone who is doing it, everyday, than from someone who theorises about doing it every day. Obviously, this depends on your profession. We can't have doctors and lawyers learning the basics by trial and error!
2, I have employed and indeed was once myself, a fucking useless intern. Most interns are useless, and to be frank many are simply a liability (When I was a chef/proprietor, I had an intern in my kitchen who was supposed to have had 2 years experience at culinary college. He was there for 2 fucking hours and he cut the end of his finger off (no basic knife skills!). I had to spend the next hour attending to him!). I suppose that there are 2 points here;
i, I, like many others was a useless intern because there was no incentive to be anything other than that. Paying $8000 dollars for the place would have been an incentive, I think. Either that or it would have put me off wasting that place and left it open for someone else who would have made better use of it.
ii, Usually interns cost the company as well as benefitting it. They have to be taught how to do everything and supervised once they do know. I take interns in order to give something back to the community and I won’t lie, occasionally you do get a diamond in the rough (Caroline Greer, came to Pollyanna as an intern almost 20 years ago. She went on to work for us for 10 years as a buyer and later bought for Harrods. She then became buying director of Harvey Nichols and was in charge of opening the Hong Kong store, before moving to Lane Crawford in Hong Kong (probably the biggest department store of its kind in the world.). She was worth the investment! but more often than not they aren’t, so it would be nice to get paid.
3, On the other hand I am very much against education of any kind, becoming the prerogative of the rich. In the working class north, we have a proud history of fighting for equality.
In conclusion, maybe there should be a new system which protects and benefits both parties (the employer and the employee);
When I owned my restaurant, I had a system whereby I encouraged all of my staff to take courses and learn as much as possible. I made them pay half of any costs which the company incurred on their behalf (This stopped people just taking the courses without thought or effort), but when they passed their exams, I gave them a pay rise which offered a return on their investment.
Everyone was a winner. The staff got a pay rise and something good to put on their CV and the restaurant had the best staff in town, which in turn helped to build its reputation.
I think that you just need to try and view the issue from both sides. I’ve been an employee and employer, and as the latter, I have to say that it does get tiring being painted as the bad guy all the time, when you’re just trying to make a living like everyone else (and often working longer hours for lower pay!)"I am so clever that sometimes I don't understand a single word of what I am saying." — Oscar Wilde

He said that in fact the jacket was not ÂŁ800 as advertised on the website but ÂŁ1400 or so! I said that I didn't want it for that price, and he said he understood and would try to get a bit taken off (acknowledging that if i hadnt called him I could simply have ordered the jacket at the lower price from the website). He didn't call back, ever.

I know it appeals to their notting hill client and even to many online customers but does not particularly float my boat.merz: your look has all the grace of george michael at the tail end of a coke binge.
