mrbeuys: I guess you hit the nail! That´s something in between. Not directly Shoreditch and not directly Hampstead, though I heard only nice things about Hampstead till now. Since I don´t have kids yet I don´t want to move into a London Prenzlauerberg or Grunewald - that´s what it probably would be called in Berlin ;)
The overground train from Dalston to Hampstead is a stunner! Do you mind if I get back to you in case I really should hunt down a place in Dalston? You probably can tell me second to none which area / street is preferable there and which not....

If you also want cheaper than Dalston, try parts of lower Clapton and Stoke Newington / Stamford Hill. I live in Stoke Newington, and I can walk to Dalston in about 10 minutes. De Beauvoir can be pretty nice as well, but it's a little pricier. If you don't mind sharing, £750 will get you a room and cover bills no problem.
