one other thought, it seems like it's easy to find a decent coffee in London but difficult (impossible maybe?) to find a great one.

Have to disagree with this. I'd say it's quite difficult to find decent coffee in London, but when you do it's usually very good. Kaffeine, Prufrock, Workshop, Monmouth and Allpress all offer coffee that could be described as great.

I tried Workshop, Monmouth, and Allpress (amongst others), all were good but not stellar at least to me. must be the Melbourne coffee snob in me coming out..

I'd recommend in Zenith, their menu changes daily but everything we had was great and reasonably priced.

try A1 Express in D'Arbly St in SOHO. There's a lot of luxury brands using them, including Yohji Yamamoto.

Edit: From experience, they're also quite good and fast.

cost of living in paris is just notably cheaper; the clothes are no different in most cases. it also helps to save money on food, transit, and hotels if the purpose of the trip is shopping, so, paris wins out in that regard.

i do prefer london as a city by far, however, but that's personal discretion.
