without question. here is a choral piece of xenakis' that is rarely heard and critically observed. an absolute favourite of mine - polla ta dhina. one of the best compositions you'll ever hear featuring a children's choir.

currently od-ing on ustvolskaya. truly an unsung genius of the 20th century. a student of shostakovich's but nary of his influence is discernible in her compositions. she's fondly referred to as the "ffff"s and "pppp"s (if you're familiar with notations) lady around the household. ffffucking incredible stuff is all i have to say.

Klang: danke for the introduction to Utvolskaya. Any household where a phantasm by the name of "ffff's" and "pppp's" resides can be nothing less than a pppphantastisch one. Two pieces popped to mind when I read your post: the pleasure of Ligeti's final "fffffffff's" in the too oft-(and poorly) attempted Etude III:X, popularly known as L'escalier du diable.

Even more pleasurable? The score of this piece, which is absolutely mind-bending. (There were two lonely years spent in South America, during which I played a recording of the complete Études, and my favorite Chromatische Phantasie -- where in the ffffffff's of the foregoing piece is balanced by the pppppp's -- on repeat through the night. I would wake in the amphibian air as if having had experienced a dream in which I was flying. (I highly suggest trying this...)

I could not locate my favorite recording of the Etudes by Frederik Ullén on youtube, so you'll have to make do with this considerably wanki-er version in which the aforementioned fffffffff is performed as if it were a fetish:

                        György Ligeti, Etude III:X

and this piece for -- at the very least, telling by its title -- 'youth', ought not be forgotten in that near-invisible genre which makes use of the children's choir (surpassed in esoteric-ness only by quartertonal compositions, perhaps). It's likely you know it, but if not, enjoy:

                        Stockhausen, Gesang der Junglinge
