My favorite album of the year is The War On Drugs' Lost In The Dream. They're a Philadelphia band triangulating Americana (in the vein of Springsteen and Dylan) with indie and psychedelia -- and a lick of Dire Straits. For awhile they were known by many as "the band Kurt Vile was in before he blossomed with Matador," but this is the year they become better known as the makers of a powerful and expansive indie masterpiece. There are synths, there are cosmic moments, and they create beautiful sound beds for the band's main-mind Adam Granduciel to spin out his guitars, his voice, his other-instruments; he essentially played them all on this record. This feels like an a propos moment to talk about them, as they absolutely destroyed on Letterman earlier this week. Catch Paul Shaffer sitting in on keys:
Another great song from the album is "Under The Pressure":
Whole thing's great, though. It's out now on Secretly Canadian. If you like it and want to trace their growth, check out their previous record Slave Ambient -- though you can live with Lost In The Dream for a long time.
I still listen to it like the first time: in a puddle of mush, eyes closed seeing red white and blue.
