Verklärte Nacht is pretty good. I just listened to it on the train.

I like this performance a lot. I think it captures the inherent 'darkness' of the piece.

          Wino and Conny Ochs

This album and the previous album (Heavy Kingdom) are collaborations with the German folk singer Conny Ochs and they really manage to create music that is grounded in the dark reality of Wino's personal experiences. This may be slightly out of the wheel-house for many of you, but I felt compelled to share, that even one of you might appreciate what these two are doing.

edit: In case someone out there isnt a metal enthusiast (which I imagine is quite a few of you), Scott “Wino” Weinrich is of The Obsessed and St. Vitus fame, and has had a tremendous impact on modern metal with the Doom genre in particular.

          Bonus shit.

Wino and Scott Kelly's live set from the Mercury Lounge in 2011. The cover of Joy Divisions' Isolation (which starts on or about the 4 minute mark) is fucking magnificent.

Caught the flue....laying in bed listening to some tunes.
I love beautiful melodies, telling me terrible things.

few people can comment on the melancholy, truculences, and tribulations of our humanity like kozelek. from a voice as weathered and experienced as the man himself, drenched in dolefulness, and used to vocalize some of the best writing in music today, he is a genius in every aspect of the word. though one of his less traditional songs, it's every bit as well written and meaningful as any other song by him. this song epitomizes, to me, at least, the lonely, poetic, and meandering zeitgeist of rock's most haunting poet.

Thanks, Anton- I liked your selection so much I'm buying the CD based on it alone. Liked yours too, Verdandi- want to listen to more. Gregor and petricor, gotta get to yours: reading posts, clicking links, playing clips, is a full time job around here.

For those interested in what's going on with contemporary music, I just came across this site:

Sister site to the wonderful blog: http://www.icareifyoulisten.com/

I have no affiliation with this site but they have posted some of my videos. I've been enjoying browsing the vids but seems like not many people have discovered it yet.

aga khan / smithsonian central asian music initiative, highly recommended (especially alim & farghana qasimov from azerbaijan, who are two of the most stunning vocalists i've encountered from anywhere). posting here b/c central asia is a russian / eastern european, middle eastern, asian melting pot, and all of those cultures influence the aesthetic of this forum.

Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, in collaboration with the Aga Khan Music Initiative, presents ten volumes of Music from Central Asia. This ground-breaking series presents authentic musical traditions

Also, from a totally different angle, this is one of my favorite releases of 2015:
"He described this initial impetus as like discovering that they both were looking at the same intriguing specific tropical fish, with attempts to understand it leading to a huge ferocious formalism he characterizes as a shark that leapt out of the tank."
