Not just monetary capitalizing, but it makes me uncomfortable to think that people's difficulties could be used for art's sake. It's one thing to document the problems around you or to bring attention to issues that could use it while having it be coincidentally evocative, but it's another thing to leave a first-world environment to seek out downtrodden subjects for the sake of an art project. Even if one thinks it alternatively beautiful, it seems pornographic and exploitative.

Ballen did not really leave his environment though - his photos are from his native South Africa. And sometimes a project that takes artistic liberties (i.e. a novel v. nonfiction, art photography v. documentary photography) can highlight a problem better. These are just thoughts - your position is valid. For example, Sebastiao Salgado's photos of misfortune are highly aestheticized and he's come under a lot of fire for it.

Oh, I see. It doesn't detract from my appreciation for the work, in any case. I tend to enjoy art that is social suicide or social terrorism (no insensitivity toward Belgium intended, just the only word that works here), something that reveals discomfort in the artist and/or audience, repercussions be damned.

Jessy Lanza's newest single, VV Violence, is pure pop goodness.

They're really good! I especially like the second track God Of Scotch Mist. If you like atmospheric metal you might A Storm Of Light -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZEy7-niUSY

But what would be the answer to the answer man?

Djing tonight at a party about a 3-4 hour set, relaxing with some ambient music and reading before I pack.
