I don't have much time to comment on this right now but I'll second any and all of Sir Ken Robinson's output. (I was actually going to post his TED lectures on this thread as they were some of the first to come to mind.)
The man is brilliant — both in his theories and his capacity to explain them intelligently yet easily to an audience. I think he makes some critical points about the dismal flaws in the American education system and how our country is practically doomed until we make sweeping reform. I suppose I care so passionately about this because I grew up within the flawed system. I went to Catholic school for 9 years of my life where my only education in the visual arts was literally to copy a famous painting once a year, with no instruction from any teacher whatsoever. They simply put the poster of the painting in the front of the class and we all sat there and drew. I'm so thankful for whatever impetus within me continued and cultivated my love for the arts outside of my formal education.
