Also in the middle of Remarque's "All Quiet On The Western Front"

"The book describes the German soldiers' extreme physical and mental stress during the war, and the detachment from civilian life felt by many of these soldiers upon returning home from the front."

I never thought of myself as a fantasy reader but lately I've really been enjoying the escapism. After going through Sara Douglass's entire back catalogue I've just started The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss which I'm really enjoying. Other than the typical fantasy "classics" by authors such as Tolkein I'd love some recommendations of other authors or titles. At this stage I've decided not to read Game Of Thrones since I'm watching it, may change my mind.
some do it fast, some do it better in smaller amounts.

Everyone has told me to read the GoT books in order to enjoy the show even more. But I don't have the time...

Does anyone know anything about this:

Came highly recommended. Apparently it has a lot to do with utilizing ritual and prayer within an atheist framework.

Already have! Though, except for some Daniel Dennett, that's pretty much the extent of my experience with contemporary philosophy.

                    grappling with alien realms:

left: I love the spirit of this book. Vexing problems? Lets see what light beauty can shed on them. The second paper is written by someone who is not only an oxford professor of quantum foundations, logics, and structures.... but also a one man industrial stoner band. see his profile and music.
right: Tarkovsky's film has long been one of my favorites, now I'm finally getting around to reading the book.
"He described this initial impetus as like discovering that they both were looking at the same intriguing specific tropical fish, with attempts to understand it leading to a huge ferocious formalism he characterizes as a shark that leapt out of the tank."

Such a sick book, Macro! I know you will enjoy it (though "enjoy" is not exactly the right word for it.)

Faust - is there anything like Blood Meridian - something as gothic and biblical?? The other McCarthy novels are not quite the same...

Could do with some new fiction after my Brassier binge...
