Aha! I've been trying to remember the name of "The Beautiful Fall", thank you!

I read "No Country For Old Men" and "The Road" last week. The later has left me worn out.

I read through half of The Road and... it was exhausting. I couldn't even finish it! I have No Country For Old Men laying around the house right now, how'd you like it? I liked the Kite Runner alright, but I wouldn't recommend picking up his following book, A Thousand Splendid Suns. Seemed... pointless. Did anyone read that all the way through?

Just wrapped up Imperial Reckoning: The Untold Story of Britain's Gulag in Kenya by Caroline Elkins. It took me two months to get through this behemoth, but it was worth it. Not recommended for those who are still trying to pick up their guts. ;)

I don't mean to be vague, but I'm not sure. It seems to go on and on in points and my eagerness for the adventure aspects made me a little impatient with some of the musings about life and grander fare.

I finally finished the book. Upon further reflection, I don't find it an important political novel, but it's good as a personal novel. I could see how it begs to be a movie though - there is a bit of unrealistic stuff in there that makes for a good action (disguised as drama).

Will start The Red and the Black by Stendhal tonight.

Its just sort of a biography on his life and it illustrates some of his stories and ties them into his experiences growing up. So far. I think Robert Crumb is swell, he always just... does it right. I wish I could say more but my brain is hazy from food poisoning (Thanks for nothin' Grandma!) sorry. Anyway, I would recommend it.

^Sounds like The Road to me....sounds like all his books, really.

To all of you guys reading Cormac McCarthy, I strongly recommend Blood Meridian.

mccarthy is a master, and blood meridian i think is his master piece, however, its kind of a dense book to jump into as a first time mccarthy read. i think the road is the perfect starter.

[quote user="laika"]The run-on sentences are most certainly Saramago's! They can be a bit tiresome, particularly in his denser, historical novels. But Blindess is so spare and swift in style....they didn't bother me at all.

yes, you get use to it. i think his writing captures the human spirit well, however i think his dialog is kind of representative of an "old man" in an old world way kind of thinking, very idiological, and with all the "proper" diction. even when he's trying to be profane, his dialog is not believeable although the actions of the characters are.

i think blindness is phenomenal as far as allogorical story's go (just like mccarthy)...

has anyone read Seeing (the sequal)? wondering if its a worthy follow up.

I want to read Blood Meridian but have yet to be able to trace a copy here in HK. Saw 'No Country for Old Men' the other day, one of the best films i've ever had the pleasure of viewing.
