It's especially amusing reading the stories being in Providence - I'm going to have to wander about and find some of the places mentioned when I have some free time.

iirc his childhood home is now gone but there is another address where he lived briefly that remains intact. in his fiction lovecraft was never very specific about locations. most of his stories were set in fictitious locales that were based on providence and its environs. but there was a brief, dark period in his life where he moved to brooklyn that inspired the wonderfully xenophobic short story "the horror at red hook." i can go on and on about hpl but in the last word his fiction is sort of a gateway drug for his letters which are a treat in and of themselves and outrank the short stories from a strictly critical standpoint.

I am not surprised to see Lovecraft being mentioned here in the drone-ninja safe haven.

(I love him too. Mountains of Madness... !!)

In this powerful speech, the great author explains his controversial decision to accept a literary prize in Israel and why we need to fight the System.

really?! i read it two summers ago. have you read the two "sequels" the hour of decision and man and technics? both are brief summations of his political philosophy and no less essential than decline imo not to mention much easier to read.

Weird, just read that yesterday. Didn't know it would show up here, since it was published in Haaretz.

Hah, should have tried to read it in Hebrew to brush up. I was pretty impressed with the nuanced take on the situation given the vitriol on all sides (I guess that was kind of the point).

Somewhat related anyone know of good Israeli shopping? I hear you can get badass artisanal shearling.

No designer shopping to speak of in Israel. Not sure about other goods - never heard of people praising shearling there. Turkey on the other hand...
