not only that, but it isn't as if pipe bends and stays perfectly cylindrical. you could use sand compacted into the inside, but good luck with that. the first time i tried doing it it took me my 3rd or 4th time to get it exactly how it should be, and that was with the proper tools.

Reproductions
Just wanted to get your opinions on furniture reproductions. Been looking to kop a grail of mine..
<img src="http://www.highbrowfurniture.com/seating/products/softpad/?EA435-282.jpg">
Though im heavily leaning towards the original for $2500 i cant help but be tempted by the reproductions that are a fraction of the price and pretty high quality.
For example:

one is approx $600 the other approx $200 and the reproduction looks pretty darn good...
Is it worth it to be ethical and have the piece of mind of owning the real thing? Since it is the design we are admiring does it matter if it's original - since it is the exact same design?
Sorry if this has been discussed before...

Monty, I've been turned off the Modernist reproductions for a few years. Everyone and their mother wants them, and to be honest, some of these were experiments at the time they were made, so they are pretty fucking uncomfortable. Let's just say that my gym has a row of Wassilly chairs and my dentist has the LC2, so...Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months - Oscar Wilde

I completely agree with your assessment.. living in Hong Kong, I couldn't walk into a single office building without being bombarded with a sea of barcelona chairs...
But at the same time i have yet to see a functional yet well designed office chair that I like other than the Eames Soft Pad Executive... Most of them are just too busy - with all the knobs and levers sticking out...
So, at this point, would you say that it has been reproduced so much that the original has lost all meaning and there is no point in owning the original... (wow i feel like im back in my UNI postmodernism lectures)

I'm a stickler for buying authentic if you can afford it. Both for equity and ethical reasons. There's something nice about knowing the piece you just bought is original, will retain its value and has a direct link to the designer. I'm a collector though, so I'm never happy with a reproduction in my house.
Originals don't have to be pricey - you can find good deals though at estate sales, markets and the like.

please, those designers are dead and their works should have been in the public domain a long time ago. is it fair that the likes of herman miller are charging a ridiculous amount of money because they have the technical monopoly?
