Understood. I myself have felt the same lately, but having already invested much moola in the modern italian game, I've resorted to throwing in cozier items in between...antique/vintage tables...more wood...hippy-print curtains, etc.

What I would suggest, is go with a sofa like the one you like, but veer in a different direction with the chair....maybe some Bauhaus design in wicker or tubular steel.

Another option - this company takes classical furniture and coats it in rubber. They're actually surprisingly comfortable and waterproof!

Sorry for not participating in the sofa discussion, I would like to but my mind is elswhere. A new chance has emerged to get the PK22 i talked about, it isn't sold and I might have a way to figure out the transportation.

It's really rugged, bland color (probably could be fixed with some oil - maybe even dye it?) and rips in the leather. I like the look, but the question is if it's worth it for a home and a chair one will actually use. Price is pretty good (I might have oversold it with great price) but keep in mind it's a Fritz Hansen, early one though. She wants €1000 for it.

Only buy it if you love it as is...even with dyeing, it will still look beat to shit. Oiling could help, but if you get into restoration/new cover, it will cost you a mint. This chair retails for about $4500 new (in leather), I imagine a bit less in Europe.

Yes, a brand new cover is a no no, then I can wait and get one on auction with less rugged cover, don't want a brand new - they are a bit boring. I like them when they are beat to shit, but I'm not 100% sure how it feels to have it at home, in stores etc. it's awesome. The dyeing or oiling of it is just to add a little bit of depth to it, now it's really matte.

She had three apparently, so I got one that was less beaten. I love it! Might try and dye it, but the natural color works for me, especially with the beating.

looks pretty bad ass, much better than the one above which was a bit too much with all the staining and multiple rips.

I'm in the process of picking out some office furniture, pondering whether or not USM cabinets will look out of place close to some older pieces of furniture.

are they too modern if put in the same space with this:

its an antique french armoire, the desk I will have will be similar in style, old wood and dark metal, along with one or two archive cabinets.

edit: I suppose its an impossible question without seeing the space.. they wouldn't be right next to each other though.

Thanks! When I found out I could pick and choose which ever I wanted it was a no brainer.

Regarding the USMs, you could probably find equally big storage in the same style as the antiques - but I assume the USMs are solid stuff that works well (haven't seen or tried on IRL). If you don't put them next to each other and also put in some more modern stuff around you should probably be safe.

I like to put stuff out of context (of course that's a bi-product of my ambivalence towards what style I want).

Edit: So in reviewing, I did only confirm what I think was your initial thought.

You answered your own question...but I agree, they don't seem to mesh quite right.

                      Prouvé RAW

The new collection of furniture, Prouvé RAW is a collaboration by Jean Prouvé x Vitra & G-STAR RAW – It was presented last June the 15th at Art Basel. It is still on for latecomers until 31st of July 2011, at the fire station by Zaha Hadid on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein. A true creative collaboration between the brand and the Vitra Museum, which has allowed a reinterpretation of the 17 iconic furniture pieces by the famous modernist designer Jean Prouvé. Newly interpreted by denim specialist G-Star and Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra in collaboration with the Prouvé family.

^ I don't get how g-star factors into the equation? What could they possibly bring to the table with a wooden bench? When I first read this, I assumed they made a few chairs with denim upholstery...but many of those items looks exactly the same as they did before, except for the two-circle thing (is that their logo?)

                          Also...

Everything looks like exact remakes of old Prouve pieces?

which I guess is a positive thing since G-Star is shite in the purest form.

It's nice to see some re-editions that haven't been in production for some time...but I'm sure there's a premium on the price because of the stupid "collabo".

my guess is that G-Star up'd the money for the re-editions... hence the
'collaboration'? you know, nowadays anything goes as 'collaboration' ;P

still, nice to have prouve's stuff updated in the g-star colorways (isn't that all they do? cover whatever in their usual gunmetal grey paint and call it a day... see RAW Cannondale, RAW Defender, RAW Ferry, etc...)... however lame the creative part is, i think rendering things monolithically in their grey gives a freshness to all these very familiar pieces...
