It's funny how Crate & Barrel has gone from a store for Wonderbread taste to actually having some nice things. In general I see a trend of mass design finally producing some decent things. I think they should continue sending spies into good interior design stores and trying to imitate them.

I've no idea how the furniture world works, but isn't that why AllSaints is so hated around these parts? It's the same thing with Crate & Barrel. Unless your'e being tongue in cheek. It's too late for me to be able to judge internet tone.

No, I was completely serious. I am not talking about direct knockoffs and watered down versions of inferior quality, but having a general change of stylistic direction.

Make your furniture goth ninja project - or staining wood black.
So, I did this yesterday, and I am very happy with the results and if I can do it, trust me, you can do it too.
Before:
Work in progress:
Finished and dried:
Voila!
Tools:
Minwax Polyshades. Make sure you pick the Satin finish, which is less shiny (maybe there is something even less shinier out there, but I was happy with this).
Sand paper - rough one (120) and fine one (220).
Process:
1) Clean the wood surface with a cleaner and a rag.
2) Sand it down first with the rough sand paper, than repeat with the fine one. Sanding is important for the surface to take in the stain uniformly and bring out the wood texture. Don't be afraid to do it, the stain liquid will take care of everything. Sand only in the direction of the wood grain!
3) Apply the stain with a brush. I used it pretty liberally - if any bubble form just brush them way. Again, brush in the direction of the wood grain.
The whole process took a little over an hour and it dried overnight. EASY.

cool. dyeing, painting and staining things (black) is one of my fave fun things to do.
now u just need to do the parquet flooring too.
Trust me, I'm tempted. But a black floor is not easy to do well (I think you'd need all white furniture to counterbalance it). Light gray though, that would rock.

Also, if anyone is interested, buying sheer white curtains was the best/simplest interior design move one could do. I was impressed how something so simple transforms a room.

nice job faust! for bonus points you can burn amber and then pour the resin in the holes of the wood. adds for a nice shrine of sorts since it seems to be set up that way.
