I finally got to see Enter the void last weekend, what a fucking dissapointment. seriously i knew the strobing would be gimmicky but it had absolutely no point. I get that it was meant to make it seem disorientating but it had no relevance to what was happening. Also how does pas de la huerta keep getting work, she is a useless actor.

I agree with FtB, but then I tend to be insensitive when I'm watching porn. That's basically what that movie is. Porn for junkies.
(I should probably add that I thoroughly dislike porn, and that there are far supperior movies on the same theme out there)Last edited by galia; 10-18-2010, 05:47 PM.

I found Inland Empire a bit drawn out. When i watch David Lynch, i can't tell if he's really this supposed great auteur, or he's just kind of producing this stuff on an aimless whim. Apparently, Mulholland Drive was originally conceived as a television series, and Inland Empire was shot without a screenplay. At least that's what it said on wikipedia, which i consulted after tumbling down the rabbit hole of Inland Empire. Though i'm not well steeped in cinema, i don't see what Lynch is all about, and i find his work a bit exasperating. I don't need a movie to be all neat and tidy, but Lynch seems like he's trying hard to make it confusing, and it doesn't help that it drags on with some weird tangents. I love Tarr's Werckmeister Harmonies, but for Inland Empire, although the pacing was appropriate in some places, a little editing would've helped. Well, Mulholland Drive was better than Inland Empire, which felt like abruptly waking up at dusk from a nightmare on a Tuesday afternoon nap in a foreign place..kinda icky. Anyway, the ending scene spooked me out! I almost spit out the Duvel i tried to nurse for the 3 hours.

Mulholland Drive was much better than Inland Empire. "Drawn out" is about as perfect an adjective as you can get for this movie. For what it's worth, I sat through the whole thing...but even though I'm a fan of Lynch's offbeat tonal jumps and penchant for seemingly meaningful non sequiturs, the film really tested my patience. It just seemed like a handheld digicam summary of his previous two Hollywood disillusioned hallucination series, Lost Highway and Mul Drive, both of which were better.

Inland empire is one of the few films ever i have not watched right through, i gave up it was so tedious. Blue Velvet has to be one of the best movies of its time but one thing i love about it is that it isn't meant to be weird, i always get a sense of complete honesty from it, everything since lost highway seems just far to eager to be kooky. At least lost highway and mulholland drive were fun.

Roy Baker Ward, R.I.P.
Learned about this just last week. A stalwart of Hammer Films if youse know it. You don't get anymore cinematically brains-explosive than Quartermass and The Pit and The Legend of The 7 Golden Vampires (co-directed with the equally incredible Chang Cheh) which was a rare collaboration between Hammer and Shaw Brothers. "Black belt against black magic". Uh-huh.
