Given this forum's obsession with darkness I thought I'd share one of the most amazing - and terrifying - things I've seen in recent times: Begotten by Elias Merhige. Susan Sontag described it perfectly as a "metaphysical splatter film", and "one of the 10 most important films of modern times"...
^terayama's a very good choice. what have you suggested? his shorter format films, like labyrinth tale and the cage, are worth having a look as well.
as for other films, about 5 immediately pop into mind: harry smith's early abstractions, and heaven and earth magic. those 2 are classics. ira cohen's the invasion of thunderbolt pagoda is another. has an amazing soundtrack by angus maclise. rene laloux's fantastic planet is psychedelic animation at its best. finally, conrad rook's chappaqua. not as tripped out as the others but a bloody good flick all the same. with appearances from burroughs, ginsberg, moondog, the fugs and ornette coleman. fun stuff. oh, i'm sure you know jodorowsky.
can't wait until the film industry is able to work out internet-direct distribution. i hate all this festival-circuit only stuff and then having to wait a full year, if not longer, before you can finally grab a physical copy. it's like their all dead on arrival and only the ones that get enough critical/financial backing get to be resurrected for us mortals to see.
for now, anyone have a karagarga invite that they can trade to me for something? know anywhere i can beg for one - criterion forums?
^ I think that film still has not been released in the US. I've been wanting to see it since it came out all those years ago.
I think you're right, and up till recent there has only been, if I remember correctly, an Australian DVD release with an absolute horrid transfer.
It's now released in Scandinavia on both DVD and Blue-ray,
but alas region 2.
It's hard to comprehend that there hasn't been a proper release up till now.
"Thankfully Irreversible raped Trainspotting up the ass, and Ex Drummer is here for you as the bastard offspring." from IMDB
sounds good, thats next on my list :)
I watched Man Bites Dog the other day. I love that you can count on European cinema to have a mockumentary about a serial killer who discusses philosophy and architecture while strangling children.
