      The Mission (1986)

      Robert De Niro
      Jeremy Irons
      Liam Neeson

This is an amazing, historically "accurate" film about a Jesuit mission in the 18th century under political and violent attack by the Portugese.

The Paperboys sucked. Underdeveloped, incoherent, poorly acted (except, surprisingly, McCounaghey), a mess.

Watched LINCOLN , Would not have seeked it out but it was the secret screening at NYFF so we had to make do.

Daniel Day Lewis is amazing as always but the film was lackluster ,it was also 3 hours too long ( supposedly not finished I would say Mr Spielberg knock it down by 1 hour) The film is mainly about his political strategy and the build up to passing the 13th ... too much sap

Maybe Iam just not a Spielberg fan he is like the Frank Gehry of film!

When Spielberg isn't making a film for children, he's making a film for manchildren.

Re-watched Carlito's Way the other day. That film is an underrated masterpiece. The final portion leading up to the scene at Grand Central is brilliant. Better than Scarface imo.

agreed, much much better than scarface which is overrated. I re-watched 'Obsession' (1976) recently, it's a nice mannerist thriller (typical of De Palma's hitchcockian period). It features the young John Lithgow who is a fantastic vilain (he also plays the main character in Raising Cain, which is my favorite DP's movie).

Ugh, why is Holy Motors playing in the worst movie theater in New York?

Watched the Return. I thought it was pretty good, but nothing outstanding.

For those interested in post-soviet cinema, one of the best films called "Brother" streams on Netflix.

                              really... Vozvrashchenie?

I really enjoyed that film, its always stuck with me. I also enjoyed Izgnanie, very beautiful.

a simple film that i really liked recently was Lantana, hard to describe why but something i personally liked.

^I remember seeing "Brother" years ago. My brother was just starting to learn Russian so he had a culture binge. I love the main character's weird obsession with trying to find a Nautilus Pompilius CD. Good movie nonetheless.

I thought this documentary was an interesting commentary on the modern democratization of culture and how it effects art/music/literature/etc.
