Watch Gomorra, it's a great cinéma-vérité look at rotten to the core contemporary Napoli.

watched this again last night. i definitely forgot all the details within the movie so when you mentioned some of it is imagined i needed to see it again before i could comment on it since i took the main plot of the movie literally when i first saw it. i see that a lot of reviewers mention the difficulty in piecing it together or knowing what is real and what it isn't, but i'm not sure i agree with making the movie so difficult. In my opinion Claire provided enough details for us to take the storyline at face value (as in yes he does have two sons) but that once he leaves france all the cutbacks to the mountains and the person following him are imagined and representative of his feelings and thoughts haunting him. However, it all seems to fall apart when he returns to Tahiti wih his one son in the casket and the other by his side. It seems so unreal that perhaps it is imagined but i find that a much more frustrating thought than taking the plot as real since it seems Claire provided enough details for it to be perceived as real. If it wasn't she should have purposely left out details to distort its meaning as Bergman did with Persona.

regardless, it's definitely a beautiful movie (as all of her movies are) and the one moment that sticks out in my mind is how when he was returning to tahiti with his son in the casket that Tahiti was blanketed with a menacing darkness where all the times before it was shown to us as being strikingly beautiful and bright.

i hope what i wrote makes sense, it's still early for me.

Watched Guy Ritchie's highly anticipated ROCKNROLLA yesterday.

Didn't go in with too high expectations, but turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Just such a shame none of Guy's future films (including ROCKNROLLA) might ever reach the cult-status of Lock Stock and Snatch.

becoming intense- you seem to do what i do- rent/rerent a bunch of the same director at once...

              This weekend:

              Fire Walk with Me
              Mulholland Drive

then- one completely stupid movie to counteract my brain confusion which I shall not mention the title

and then onto La Dolce Vita last night.

Eraserhead, Inland Empire and Lost Highway- coming next

I must admit, Kira, I never rent movies ...

So I just got this little black box here the other day, but I really do enjoy, like you, watching the work of one director in a string ...

I saw Hunger last night... a really fantastic film unquestionably deserving of the cache of awards it picked up. Beautifully shot.

Earlier in the week I went to see a film called Vice at a mini Russian film festival which was running, It wasn't terrible, but just seemed to be trying too hard to fit into a familiar, American style, storyline.

I also found a copy of Dark City in my housemates room and loved it

is that film made by the Steve McQueen who walked Yohji's S/S 09 show? That poster looks dope, i'd like to check that movie out based on that alone.
