So I got the white/grey overlock jacket a few days ago and noticed it also had the "Safe" label on the booklet. A few people were also wondering about it too since it was stamped on the boot/shoe soles since, what, 2005? The theory of overstocked pre-stamped leather soles didn't make too much sense to me since it keep appearing even when he changes sole types (from the old cow leather soles with horizontal lines/engravings, to the smoother cow and bull leather soles, to the rubber ones and now perforated ones?). Also, "Safe" isn't the name of any collection (according to the MAK site at least) as well.
My theory is that it's a (humorous maybe? i.e. FW06 "On Demand") self-critical commentary on some of the pieces he puts out. For example the boots and overlock leather jackets, those are pretty much what he sells the most (given by the production numbers on the tags), it's also what stores will inevitably stock and arguably what the customer base is most interested in. I think Carol recognizes a certain commercial aspect of some pieces (i.e. an SA at Atelier mentionned that Carol threatened to quit making footwear after FW06 because he felt they were becoming too "commercial"), and he realises that carrying over those pieces from season to season (despite minor changes) is a bit "safe".
Maybe he's also commenting on how limited and restrictive menswear is, how he's "forced" to narrowly operate in it, innovation being focused on fabric design and cut? From MAK's site: "THE MALE COLLECTIONS ARE GENERALLY NOT SUBJECT TO A THEME OR CONCEPT. CONCENTRATION IS ON FABRIC, STRUCTURE AND HOW TEXTURE RELATES TO FORM, PERFECTION OF MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION IS SOUGHT. [...] HE USES CLASSICAL ELEMENTS OF A MASCULINE WARDROBE AND PLACES THEM IN A DIFFERENT CONTEXT."
Anyways, just a thought. Might have to confirm exactly what pieces get labeled that way.
"AVANT GUARDE HIGHEST FASHION. NOW NOW this is it people, these are the brands no one fucking knows and people are like WTF. they do everything by hand in their freaking secret basement and shit."
