He couldn't care less about the clothes. Chances are he didn't even choose them. It's not about personal expression in any way. He has a stylist who dresses him in a way that will resonate with his fans/support his brand and hopefully sell albums and concert tickets. And in that sense, it seems to be working.
It's like criticizing Warren Buffett for wearing boxy suits and driving a GM Oldsmobile - sure, both are true, but you'd be completely missing the point.
I think it's easy to get carried away with our discussions of aesthetics, authenticity, etc. and forget that not everybody thinks that way, and not everybody has to think that way.Originally posted by jogui went out to take garbage out and froze my tits runnin down stairs , think im gonna chill at home tonite . hungry tho anyone have cool ideas on what to order for supper , not pizza tho sick of pizza

Whoever prophesied the day we'd attach The Birdman with m.a+ turned out to be very prophetic indeed.
The Jay-Z in Rick is whatever, like a few above mentioned. Probably the work of a stylist, Jay himself probably hasn't set foot in an actual clothing store in a long time and doesn't care much other than the idea he's decked out in something fresh and up to the moment. Different from a case of somebody attaching themselves as vehemently to the fashion machine as Kanye.

Oh man, I remember that video...found it funny then, but looking at that period retrospectively I don't think the guy was going through an easy time...post-Amber Kanye though, yeah back to scheduled programming, fair game why not.
but yeah back to Rick.
edit - will comment though, that leather the stylist picked for jay-z in performance was a bad call. Because I see that jacket as a street piece, not a show piece. The Margiela biker jacket was more appropriate for the kind of swagger you'd be going about with on the stage. As it is, that Rick jacket doesn't seem to lend itself to a flattering execution of seamless movement if worn open; if closed, again it's more something you'd be walking around town in and that isn't the kind of stance one's outerwear should be in if they're flailing about with a microphone. If they were gonna go Rick, should've done something like the drkshdw denim/leather jacket...and I think the longer version of that would've fitted someone of Jay-Z's build well.Last edited by Fade to Black; 02-21-2010, 08:13 AM.
