i thought it was some ancient technique of cutting the laces out of a big circle of leather

        'ancient' used loosely

it does seem that they are cut from a circle of leather, or at least cut in a circular direction, which would to make effecient use of the leather and does not require a large surface area to give you a really long pair of laces.........................

Just to add to this, the laces are cut from circular piece of leather. I believe they are actually die-cut to give a consistent shape to the lace and he does work with the same factory as CD.

As far as the Converse shoes go, the leathers used are really beautiful and have a great hand feel. I had the chance to see these first hand back in Florence. He's also created new last's for each of the styles that will be released for this project.

Pardon my skepticism, but seems like Sak and Converse are so divorced from each other - why force this unnatural relationship between a leather artisan and a Nike-owned sporting goods conglomerate?

but I can't agree. unless you have actually seen these work in person. I must say, it may sound 'unnatural' at first but if you actually think what a challenge it was- and once i saw the product in life, even more- you will have a second thought on that. actually i would appreciate even more in these converse-sak, than the actual sak shoes that i handled couple of times...

Not questioning the product per se, but the brand synergy.

if the factory is still making these laces, does that mean it's possible to get new ones? I need a replacement lace for my cdiems

Agreed, I really, really like the black ones. Probably couldn't justify paying the price for them, but if I could, I definitely would, even if only to look at them occasionally.

They do look good indeed but I wouldn't pay the price.

I think that questioning the synergy is legit but in light of the sole discussion in the Augusta thread this actually makes a lot of sense. He can create a high quality product with all the benefits a large company like Converse (Nike) provides. And due to the limited amount they can have a good quality throughout the collection. Makes everyone happy I suppose, Nike earns more money, Hiruma gets to create and get exposure and the consumers get a good product.

I also think the lace detail is pretty funny, a bit kitsch but a bit clever somehow.
