The problem that I always found with fashion magazines is that most of the writers have a degree in English, or history or quantum fucking physics, but no education in fashion. I understand that there are exceptions, but in the main, this is true, or used to be the last time I gave a shit. Our industry is the only one that I can think of, which allows people with nothing more than an interest in the subject and a 'penchant' for putting pen to paper, to write for and build a career in the international press. It wouldn't happen in the fine art world, or the medical world, or the business world!

...and don’t get me off on the fucking stylists!!!

    ...Thank god for the photographers!

I know Mass likes Paradis and the issues I looked at were pretty good. Purple isn't bad either.

        So:

I-D (best article ever was page B girls wearing Dolce and explaining why they love it. Sincerity and true audience for once). Hobo says this is out

Arena blabla: Yeah, can't stomach it either. It just looked too much like a gay lifestyle mag and while I respect that this isn't what I'm about.

A magazine: when it's well curated it's magic. They have a blog now with old articles. Nice!

Paradis: check it out, not only fashion. The problem with hyped magazines is I'm not into Terry Richardson and this photog school.

Purple: Crossing the bridge between art&fashion. They feel real clever but some of the shoots are still great.

Gap men press: jap mag like the Italian Collezioni. Runway shots divided by collections with engrish analysis. If you wanna see what happened in Milan and Paris and have it in an easy to carry format this is it.

Men's non-no: Jap style bible. Pages and pages of looks; either editorials or street shots. I almost never like it but it's one of the ultimate references.

Encens: Yeah, they use Raf, Rick and other designers we like or used to like.

Leon: pictures of geriatric Italians in suits doing the sprezzatura like it's spazzatura. The sartorialist basically got his idea there. I sound very critical but some of the shots are cool, I just hate how forced the idea of sprezzatura is. (wikipedia it, oh and spazzatura means garbage).

Monocle: men's lifestyle mag that usually has one ok article. Mostly aimed at friends of the sartorial like Leon.

Personal confession: I don't buy magazines anymore. Fashion writing just kills me and most editorials bore me to tears. I'm sure people are doing good work, I'm just not on board right now.

I recently saw some mag that looked like a 70s porn shoot mixed with fashion; it definitely needs some work but the idea is sound. MikeNouveau could give additional details as he knows them.

What can I say... the cover was blown in 30 seconds!!!

...anyway, I'm really enjoying the SZ! It's brightened up the last few days, no end.

          Big love.

The problem is I'm always picking apart outfits as they walk down the runway and its just easier to go by piece in the showroom where visual and tactile experience meet. That and I don't like to be spoon fed.
            Fashion magazines
But fashion magazines SHOULD be good; after all fashion is a medium that is, in a large proportion, visual and easily combined with other artistic/technical forms like photography, makeup, hairdressing etc. Add some inspiring and enlightening writing and you should be golden. Why don't we care?? I think almost no one reads fashion mags here, why is that?

There are just too many mags out there. Most of them should and will be killed. And it's a circlejerk of an industry with a very few people on top making money and editorial space given out not on the basis of merit but as favors.

Well considering the pay at many of these is 0$-$500/article ($0 being very common) it's just not worth the trouble unless you're part of the circle jerk. People writing for GQ are probably doing ok though but then I'm sure corporate lawyers also do good and at least they're frank about what they're about.

I just don't buy this; there's very few people working at each mags and a huge fashion audience. On the contrary existing mags should get better, audiences should get on board and many other ones should emerge.

I love how MA thread became about Poell and IS thread became about magazines

I like these derails though - it's a sign that people are interested.

While we're on a topic. Mags I would like to see would discuss:

                            -Garment and shoes construction
                            -Sartorial tradition/tailoring
                            -Traditional shoemakers
                            -Innovative runway shows/designers
                            -Good new expos/art
-nice editorial mixing it all up
-Articles about the state of the industry
-fabric shows and what they mean for next season
                            -A few street shot/how it's worn

Of course that's an almost nonsensical mix and would only appeal to an audience of one (me).
