400 made in maroon with a later 200 in black. F design was not in fact Factory's F but the Fractured Music logo, Fractured Music being Joy Division's publishing arm.
From an original idea by Durutti Column guitarist Dave Rowbotham who, late one night in Strawberry studios, suggested Factory do a badge "like a prefect's badge, you know, enamel". Dave was later to die in a vicious axe murder that was memorialized in the Happy Mondays song, "Cowboy Dave."
One wonders where it will end, when everything has become gay.
