I'm well on my way to being model-skinny apparently. Three more days of being this sick and I'll have lost 10 pounds. Fuck.

I personally prefer models to look interesting more so than just skinny, be it the Rick Owen's weirdo or some of Helmut Lang's beefier but... stranger looking models. But to be perfectly honest, I see stuff on skinny tall people that looks fantastic that I know I wouldn't be able to pull off at 5'6 - 5'7, probably just because my eyes have been trained by modern fashion to see it that way.

Conforming to a beauty standard is a bad thing in my book,
Using health threatening methods to achieve it are even worse,
we can surely agree on that.

But how much influence does this look, discussed in the article,
really have, if we look at the broader picture, with increasing obesity figures
      especially in western societies?

      I
can definitely see it in New York - no doubt about it. The same thing
that's been happening with the black NYC population thinning out after
      hip-hop went glam.

So you have groups that are thinning out, and then you have a majority, which I'll still argue there is,
of the population that are getting more and more overweight. It's one extreme to another!

Being underweight is a health problem just like obesity

      Yes, indeed it is!

Are you afraid of women, Doctor?
      Of course.

[quote user="Faust"]I really have no interest in models looks, but the fact that people lead unhealthy lifestyles to conform to some beauty standard that has been pushed on them by those who are neither young nor beautiful themselves (ever been at a fashion show?) is just insane.

I think that's the most fascinating part; this gallery of horrors draped in luxurious garb, looking longingly at young flesh. They should provide Venetian masks at entry.

I know, this is a total Hunter Thompson moment. Do you remember the scene in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas when he is on acid and every person at a casino looks like a reptile? I LOVED that. I don't think one could depict it better.

i'm about 165 and 6'2" and in no way can i imagine getting any skinnier. i still have problemsfitting into all these skinny jeans that people are making these days (even though i have skinny legs) cuz i still go biking and running. these guys must not be involved any physical activities to stay that thin. Being that most people spend the majority of their lives indoors now anyhow, i can't imagine being thin is really that unhealthy as long as you balance it with a little aerobic and resistance training.

making people look young and hip is big business for a lot of people and being thin is one of the typical ideals of youth. i enjoy the fact that designers are using thin models though.if anything, it's a nice big finger to our culture (whoarecontinually justifying themselves being overweight) that designersareshowingan ideal imagethatmost people look downon (and are oftendiscriminatory against).
