The battle between LVMH and Hermes

    An excellent article from NYT.

Why would they make Hermes a publicly traded company if they wanted to avoid situations like this? I think they would get along just fine anyways, Hermes was never anything but amazing leathers with a big metal H, with a few exceptions.

The funny thing is that Hermes already makes all the filler stuff - ties for mid-tear wall street bankers, scarves for their wives, perfumes for the rest. The two companies are a bit alike in that way. Flagship LV stuff is also made in a Parisian suburb by hand, and Arnault has really been trying to curb the fluff and advertise the shit out of safe white celebs in order to bring the label away from rappers and suburban housewives back to UES WASPs.

Anyway, for Arnault it's pure ego - nothing more, nothing less. Hermes is the crown jewel of the luxury industry and to get it would get him off. It's the only thing he has to trip on - money doesn't get him high anymore.

While we are on that topic, LVMH just acquired Bulgari

The Bulgari family will take two LVMH board seats and will become the second-largest family shareholder behind the Arnaults in LVMH, with a 3.3% share.
