Steam has once again broken records, achieving one of its most successful periods in terms of concurrent users and in-game players, reaching over 33,675,000 users online on January 7, a new milestone reported by Steam DB, a platform tracking various data related to Valve's PC gaming service. Additionally, Steam marked another achievement on January 6 by setting a record for the highest number of players in-game, surpassing 10,837,000 players actively engaged. Notably, Steam had initially broken the 10 million in-game players milestone in January 2023.
The list of most-played games during this record-breaking period included familiar titles, with Valve's own games maintaining a prominent presence. Counter-Strike 2 attracted over 1.2 million players, while Dota 2 saw more than 730,000 players on January 7. Team Fortress 2 also secured a spot in the top 10, boasting nearly 160,000 players. Popular titles like PUBG: Battlegrounds and Rust continued to maintain their long-standing popularity on Steam.
While many of Steam's top-performing games are multiplayer-focused live-service titles, Baldur's Gate 3 demonstrated its enduring appeal since its August 2023 launch, drawing nearly 300,000 players on January 7, surpassing titles like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3/Warzone. Indie hit Lethal Company also made a strong impression, reaching over 200,000 concurrent players at its peak on January 7.
Given the platform's remarkable performance in 2023, launching over 14,535 games, an increase of 2,000 games from the previous year and more than double the releases in 2018, Steam is poised for another significant year in 2024. The sheer volume of game releases on Steam in 2023 far exceeded any other platform, with the Nintendo Switch, the runner-up, receiving 2,360 games during the same period.
