Suzuki Takayuki - Japan Infusion
http://www.eco-asia.info/content/f-suzuki-takayuki Text by Vic • Photos provided by Suzuki Takayuki • 30 Apr 2009
To Suzuki Takayuki, individuals should not concentrate just on trends, but enjoy every minute of a garment’s life-cycle, even when it is worn out. Not only is he notoriously eco-conscious when it comes to fabrics, but he is a mastermind when it comes to construction and detailing. Takayuki is a rising star in Japan’s fashion circles.
Beauty is in the Eye of Beholder
Beauty can be found in anything; dirty objects like torn out flowers or abandoned buildings can be seen as beautiful. This appreciation give Takayuki’s collections the life and warmth of the human touch. It is not that clothes make beauty, but that clothes draw out the beauty women already have. By adopting natural materials, his products express organic feeling without the hardness of industrial products. The decrepit beauty that his work embodies marks him out as an original.
In these days of a drastically changing world, what must we consider and protect? “I have always been interested in natural materials and have always used them in my collection. I was more interested in the texture of the natural materials as the concept of my current collection is ‘the time and harmony’. It is important to me to know how my clothes age and that they will still be wearable when the time passes.” Being an eco-fashion designer, Takayuki has always believed in blending the harmony of nature, ecology, and a feel for humanity.
Not only is Suzuki Takayuki notoriously eco-conscious when it comes to fabrics, but he is a mastermind when it comes to construction and detailing.
Dark and Quirky Beauty
Links, decomposition, and re-building the "web", Takayuki wants to cherish the feelings of interactive communication, so he named his latest collection "TANGLED (meaning confusion and disputes)" for the theme which he launched last month and presented in an artistic manner. The garments are suspended by silk threads which form webs. Instead of using white and natural colours, on this occasion he has chosen black for a change. “The concept that I have for this theme is like people and fashion, time and place from production to purchase, the relationship is like a string - one thing links to another which intrigues and inspires me and I like to explore.”
The dark and quirky beauty that his work emanates, coupled with the fact that the fabrics themselves are very airy and ethereal, generates a combination that is truly magical and precious. His multi-layered and tiered pieces are gorgeous, and cut to perfection.
Be Flexible and Have Fun
In 2008, he also started two labels; "ikkuna/suzuki takayuki", which uses organic cottons, and "toha" in which he conducts experimental collaborations between textiles and other genres such as furniture and accessories. Each item is developed following communication with technical experts in the textile production areas of Hamamatsu, Nishiwaki, and Yamagata. Since the quality of apparel largely involves the senses and is hard to describe, having direct contact with such technical experts is very important to enabler him to create what he wants.
Takayuki wants to cherish the feelings of interactive communication, so he named his latest collection "TANGLED.
“I only use organic cotton I can trust. I have to know how it is produced and who makes it. I have to know everything about it in order to use it in my collection. I believe that true luxury is mental and not material. For my style. I introduce six collections a year, including Suzuki Takayuki (collection line), ikkuna/suzukitakayuki (specialised in organic cotton), and toha (collaboration line). I get inspirations from little things in daily life and also from beautiful people around me.” he says.
Takayuki aims to make good quality collections for his clients and customers so that they will get interested in ecology and be part of it as a result, “Even though consumers want design and style, they should also choose something that they will not throw away after one season.”
Always have goals which you aim to accomplish and yet remain flexible - and have fun: that’s Takayuki’s philosophy in life.let us raise a toast to ancient cotton, rotten voile, gloomy silk, slick carf, decayed goat, inflamed ram, sooty nelton, stifling silk, lazy sheep, bone-dry broad & skinny baffalo.

here are some look shots, posted by runner on tfs.
imo the colour balance of the pictures takes a bit away from the appearance, but figured I'd post these anyway:
