Re: Thom Browne for Brooks Brothers

Hello! It's Brooks Brothers, this is all about wasps, that's the point. As far as BB's usual offerings go the menswear Browne has presented is an improvement. The highlights are the outerwear, the other pieces are a little common. A smart dresser could take these garments and style them into something special. If they ever will is sort of the key question.

The womenswear is WORSE than what BB usually sells. God, are you serious?!

I was hoping he'd give me a reason to visit BB's this fall but just kidding.

Correction, Brooks Brothers is for aspiring WASPS, not real ones. You don't see a BB store on Madison Avenue, it's all in the malls.

Right, in the Grand Central vicinity - I'd expect that.

Actually, it has a very long and steady history of dressing the conservative upper crust of America for almost 200 years. I think you mean Ralph Lauren when you mention aspirational WASP clothing. We have several BB items in the costume collection I work in, the donors were the real thing.

There are Hermes, Burberry, and Salvatore Ferragamo stores in malls. Jeffrey's Atlanta is in mall too, so that's really not the most sound logic.

Let's not get tangled in semantics. I'm well aware that American at Manhasset has Barneys and such - a "mall brand" is a pretty meaningful term, I think.

As far as BB legacy - you are right - but that was then.

                        Brooks Brothers Gets Bold

Thom Browne's Black Fleece ad campaign debuts

                        Tuesday, July 17, 2007

                        (NEW YORK)
Brooks Brothers has gone bold with its new Black Fleece campaign.

                        In
an attempt to attract a younger, more fashion-forward clientele, the
established American brand, which has dressed everyone from Abraham
Lincoln to Andy Warhol, will embark on the largest print ad campaign
push in the company?s 189-year history starting this September. Chief
among the touted products will be Black Fleece, the high-end collection
designed by Thom Browne, who signed a two-year contract with the brand
                        earlier this year.

Brooks Brothers recently tapped AR, who counts
Banana Republic, Calvin Klein, and Dolce & Gabbana among its
clients, as its new agency partner for its core brand Brooks Brothers
and for launch communications for the Black Fleece collection, part of
                        its new guest-designer program.

                        The new campaigns for Black
Fleece and Brooks Brothers were shot over two days in studio and on
location in New York City by photographer Tom Munro and styled by
Edward Enninful. Models Georgina Grenville, Alex Beck, Gelati, and
James Branagan were cast for Brooks Brothers while Inguna and Frank
Brown will appear in the Black Fleece campaign when it launches in such
September books as Vogue and GQ.

                        Capturing the
Brooks Brothers legacy while maintaining a modern theme, the campaign
launch, which eschews the catalog-like feel of the past, features a
brand manifesto brought to life in an innovative newspaper format. The
campaign will also include an engaging online experience that
communicates the essence of the brand and its connection to a
distinctly modern style that speaks to the customer through the
strategic platform of ?Refined, Redefined.? Shot in black and white,
the style of photography is expected to resonate with current Brooks
Brothers customers, expressing the brand?s timeless story as it seeks
to capture new clients with the Black Fleece collection.

                        Brown,
for example, is featured five times alongside Inguna in the Black
Fleece ad wearing the same suit. The only discernable difference is his
facial expression, which has him conveying a series of different moods.
The garments also feature a black version of Brooks Brothers?s iconic
?Golden Fleece? logo, a sheep encircled with a ribbon.

                        While a
company spokesperson declined to divulge campaign costs, the estimated
$7 million initiative will be packaged in 6-to-24 page spreads that
will feature a metamorphosis of the brand?beginning with Brooks
Brothers?s more conservative and traditional designs and ending with a
spread featuring Browne?s Black Fleece designs. The accompanying
tagline, a twist on the company?s long-maintained ?Generations of
Style? slogan, will read ?Style For A New Generation.?

                        Sixty
percent of the Black Fleece collection is geared towards women, with
sizes running from an equivalent of 0 to 10. Prices, which are about 30
to 40 percent higher than traditional Brooks Brothers clothing, range
from $150 cotton button-down shirts and $700 cashmere sweaters for men
                        to $1,900 for a woman?s herringbone-lined trenchcoat and an
                        over-the-top $10,000 astrakhan fur cape.

                        Brooks Brothers plans to
sell the Black Fleece collection in 30 of its 100 stores worldwide. Its
New York flagship will feature a full floor dedicated to the
merchandise. It will also be available on the company?s Website.

I don't like it that much, save a few garments (mostly women's)... Looks nothing like Browne, nor does it have the fetishistic edge. Baaaaa*.
