I had that happen when I ordered something from the Netherlands. I also live in USA. I went along with it figuring they needed it to make sure product shipped outside EU. I guess having that number floating around could be cause for concern, didn't think it was worth worrying about.

I know nothing about that, and wouldn't feel comfortable giving my passport number, doesn't make any sense. All the store/shipper should care about is the destination they are shipping to and a passport has nothing to do with that..
How would that confirm anything any way?
