This isn't necessarily personal inspiration except I'm not sure where else to put it (it could potentially inspire someone else). But it was too beautiful to leave out.

Those terayama shuji photos are incredible. Sat through about half of Emperor Tomato Ketchup a few months ago... Wish I could find subs for it. Can't understand much without them.

                    Stranded in Canton

It's out on DvD essential stuff if you like Eggleston.
"In the real world", is a fantastic documentary also on Bill, beautifully shot and a real insight into his work.

                    • something deeply sinister about cicciolinas face, with those low straight eyebrows, and her ultra wide smile.

I'm not sure if this is quite what this thread is intended for, but here goes anyway.

One thing that stands out as a lasting inspiration for me was my experience of being involved in the rave and free/traveller festival scene in the UK in the early 90s.

I wasn't very consciously interested in the 'style' element of things back then, but I can see now how deeply it has shaped me. Going to raves put on by Soundsystems like Spiral Tribe, Circus Warp, DiY, Lazyhouse, Eze-Love, and soaking up the vibes at their parties, seeing the vision of life they offered - for a wide-eyed 16 year old that was something powerful that has stayed with me in so many ways. It has shaped my moral and political views, and at some level my style as well.

One of the most interesting crews was the Mutoid Waste Company, who made amazing sculptures out of scrap metal - their parties were had a mash-up of visual influences like Mad Max and Judge Dredd, and the sounds of acid house and techno made it all seem like it was beamed in from Tatooine.

Their Car-henge sculpture in the photo above was such a powerful statement about reconnecting with an ancient sense of Britishness, which was being eroded by Thatcher's government. It captured the sense of social decay at that time, and seemed to suggest a creative alternative - to reclaim the detritus of modern life for creative, humanistic ends.

Well, I'm not sure how or if any of that is visible in my style, but it's certainly in my head. Thanks Muties!
