about reconnecting with an ancient sense of Britishness, which was being eroded by Thatcher's government. It captured the sense of social decay at that time, and seemed to suggest a creative alternative

i think this has always been in the air at least since "punk broke", most emphatically through underground pockets of movements such as anarcho-punk, crust, and the underbelly of "industrial music" during the time. bands / acts like crass, rudimentary peni, amebix, antisect, nurse with wound, coil, c-93, ptv, tg, etc. spring immediately to mind. essentially, dissenting creative outsider voices filtered through or producing a sense of "britishness" that is impossible to discern from the vantage point of the british mainstream. an ancient britishness perhaps... but an ancient-ness associated with a past that never was. a re-imagination of the past (in this instance: britain's pagan and folk cultural past), as it were, that has as much to do with the past as the present and more importantly, the future. a veritable sublimation and retrieval of the british "unconscious". it's almost paul harnden in some respects, yes?

derek jarman's (himself a contributor to that "outsider british" imagination and sensibility) films capture aspects of that particular milieu's pathos and ethos rather well. definitively and quintessentially british. needless to say, it's a "style inspiration".
