Damn!
I always hated PETA........ but images like this would make me temporarily joined their camp!“You know,” he says, with a resilient smile, “it is a hard world for poets.”

The nasal tubercle technique is pretty old and similar methods are still in use today. You create a slowly extending tissue tubercle/flap that you let grow for months and then when it is large enough you can separate it from the arm and there will be enough free tissue to reconstruct a nose-type structure with. They use similar techniques now for generating flaps to cover hand defects etc when a free flap graft is not desired or not possible.
The famed Vacanti mouse uses a nude mouse lacking an immune system as a living incubator for the biocompatible scaffold that was formed in the shape of an ear. The scaffold was first seeded with cartilage cells (chondrocytes) prior to insertion under the mouse's skin to grow... theory being that as the chondrocytes developed they would replace the synthetic scaffold and result in a completely cartilaginous ear. This early tissue engineering foray had mediocre results as the scaffold replacement had contractions and deformations in situ but since then many other models have been developed.
