Margiela's are replica's of the original German Bundeswehr trainers which I believe were produced by Adidas for the German military.

Margiela did some minor "upgrades" to the military issue ones making them somewhat higher quality but the originals hold up like crazy. I wear a pair that I've had for more than 5 years with heavy heavy wear.

I have a pair of original GATs as well (Margiela is wrong about Austria even if he found them there, Austria has never had that type of military shoe). Margielas are nicer than the originals or any repros (even Dior B01s) though

I still don't understand why people are so crazy about those sneakers. To me they are pretty much the most plain and anonymous pair of shoes there is along with the converse all-stars. But maybe that's the point? As I said, I don't get it.

Well he has done a few variations that are a bit more interesting looking. There was a pair that where iredecent purple/brown with purple silk laces a few years ago. I had a pair but unfortunately had to return them has the coating started to crack and fall off after about an hour of wear.

TarHeart's point is pretty obvious....Addidas are bandwagoning on the success of the Margiela replicas. They've been doing re-issues for years and have never touched this one. It's like a replica of a replica, and actually it looks shit because of the branding.
