at my high school everyone wore boat shoes (actually tons of people still wear boat shoes at my college) and i confess i owned a pair since i didn't care about fashion for most of that period. one of the worst parts about them is their fucking smell. i put sneaker balls in them for like a month or two and they never smelled again though...fuuma's advice is the most sound.

i think they are a bit more acceptable if you're actually on a boat/dock...but even so, for the casual person who's on a boat for pleasure some simple sneakers like vans would be just as functionally good, and look better.
