There are certainly relationships between fashion and art but by no means will they ever be considered one in the same. McQueen is really the only person who I think came close to that. You can call it fashion all day but it's still clothing. If it's not wearable people won't buy it. At least not to the degree that will keep that designer afloat.
And now there are artists who I see creating the same stuff over and over because they're making a fortune off of it. Money enables you a better life and you can't help but to allow it to drive some aspect your work. It is a nice thought that you're not just a cog in the giant machine of commerce. I really don't feel like I am. But clothing has to "work" to a with daily life. It has to function or it fails. Yet in a way it's decorating who we are and giving some insight to what we're about. A message, which is essentially what a lot of art is. Rarely is art functional on a physical level.
I wasn't saying that we're all artists and intellectuals.. I'm certainly not but that assumption is there from the outside looking in.
