indeed, it was a really great job and I was lucky to find it. truly a book fetishists dream, and I picked up a great skill set too (because of my painting ability/experience, by the time I graduated I'd become the departments leather repairs specialist).

during college I held down a job in book preservation services at the library, which gave me special access privileges to the rare books collection. among my various abuses of these privileges was tracking down an original illustrated edition of justine (which I had previously seen behind glass at moma's desire unbound show).

I was also able to spend a good deal time with an early, serialized printing of une semaine de bonte.

good times that I look forward to revisiting should I ever become rich, or else take an unexpected career detour into library sciences.

I believe I am in serious envy of you right now... So tell me, how does one get a job in book preservation services? I now plan to follow in your footsteps except abuse the privileges one step further and obtain Justine book for my personal library! muhahaha... or at least get 500+dpi scans of every page.

not sure it's a possibility in every college, but where I went, you just went down to the basement of the library (where the workshop/office was) and asked. they accepted new applicants at the beginning of each year and had a kind of dexterity test for the application involving cutting straight lines, drawing straight lines, folding, tearing, etc.

unfortunately, because of how the loan system was set-up, if the copy of justine went missing, or even left library premises, it would immediately be tracked back to me. believe me, I thought very seriously about how to pull off the heist, but came up with nothing. I did however nab a few old occult and parapsychology books from special collections at the science library. their security was nonexistent.
