i am constantly amazed by the quality of stitching possible with one of those awls... they are really fun to use. If you have ever tried to hand stitch leather without one you know what I mean. The waxed thread you have to use is perfect too.

you guys make me want to create stuff myself. Books to read to get started on leatherwork and or jewelcrafting?

I can only speak for leather however, it really isn't that hard... start with imitating stuff you admire, m.a+ is the easiest, then transfer the techniques to your own designs. Simple patterns always turn out better. Chose leather you like the look of... for a bag it shouldn't be too stiff... you'll probably have to hand stitch so get an awl, they're really easy to use the other things you'll need are a skiving knife, a craft knife, a hole punch, and a hammer. you're set so get creative.
