the result was very matte. I suppose the key is not to polish them, but to actually scrub them. a terry cloth towel is surprisingly rough when you add some pressure.
as for caring, I don't usually do anything to my boots except wear them and occasionally wipe clean if needed. not sure if thats the best way, but I've never had any problems. I've never seen good quality leather crack with regular use. but maybe someone who knows a bit more can elaborate on what type of leather is more prone to cracking.
