If I had straight hair I would rock this.

I've been growing some parts of my hair out for a while now. Once it gets long enough it's going into the top-knot thing until it gets long enough to do something more like this Yohji image. We'll see if I make it that far.

One wonders where it will end, when everything has become gay.

mona, just got home from a 3 hour stint at the salon...thanks to your picture i now have a blast of a cut. its short in the back and long and wavy graduating to the front. my hair took to it like i was hoping. color was fun too, with black underneath and auburn on top with violet auburn highlighting my top curls and then a glaze all over. its the style i craved but needed to see done irl. i found a great texturist which was key, since she has hair just like mine and a knack for the avant garde. my gratitude, i toast you.

This is one of my favourite pictures ever. The best part is how the guys in the back are acknowledging that dude is styling on them.

It's really difficult to keep the hair below your ears properly moisturized if you wash it too often. You stimulate hairgrowth and shed hair with brushing moreso than with washing, cause while schampooing long hair, you need to be careful not to ruffle your hair too much, as it would cause unneccessary tangles afterwards. unneccessary tangles really damages.

of course, the frequency of washing depends on how dry someones hair is, and how long it is, but most people don't need to wash it that often. My friend washes it once a week cause her hair is naturally dry.

I know when i washed my hair every other day it never looked good. my hair looks its best on the 3rd day. you can train your scalp to adapt to a less frequent washing routine. If you wash too often your scalp will produce loads of sebum, which makes the hairline greasy really quickly, but the tips will still be squeaky clean. And when you wash completely stripped hair repeatedly, it never gets the chance to recoat itself with sebum. so greasy scalp, dry ends.
Again, this really depends on what kind of shampoo/conditioner you're using. A good shampoo and conditioner will not dry out your hair, even if used daily, or twice daily.

Hair is a dirt/oil/smoke magnet. Now imagine what your pillow case has absorbed after a week of not washing your hair.

You may not be aware of it, because it's your hair, but hair really starts to smell after a couple days of not washing. Believe me, we (hairstylists) talk about this all the time. The water in the shampoo bowl literally turns brown while shampooing.

Short hair actually does not need to be washed as often as long hair.

I don't know where you live, but in stockholm we don't have that problem. I read up on long hair cair, and i go to a salon where they specialise in extreme length hair cair, and i haven't heard that.

I'd gladly recieve ideas on good schampoo/conditioner though!

Haha we are in completely different climates (i'm in california).

Probably explains the different advice for hair care.

There are a lot of good brands out there. In CA, the top lines are probably Kerastase and Shu Uemura (but they're a bit pricey). From the lines I've worked with anything by Bumble and Bumble, Davines, Alterna, Pureology etc. should be fine. Pretty much anything not from a drug store.

Is it the sulfid stuff that makes the schampoo lather that I need to stay away from?

Yes - sodium lauryl sulphate - can be especially drying on curly hair and sensitive skin - I am allergic to it and have had to find an alternative rutine to shampooing with conventional shampoo.

Hailing from tropical climes - I also disagree that climate has anything to do with how often you wash your hair with shampoo. I wash my hair with conditioner - Nopoo-ing using conditioner as a shampoo. I stay away from conditioners that contain silicones as they cause build up.

Nopoo-ing is especially good for curly + long hair as the conditioner cleanses without stripping the hair.

Hairstylist Orlando Pita rinsed and oiled his hair instead of shampooing for an extended period of time- grew it very long - cut the hair and donated it.

not shapooing my hair would just seem so itchy, I'm not sure I could bear it. but I'm a horrible example, I wash it everyday although I use the gentlest organic shampoo I can find.

we "civilised people" wash way too much for our own good anyway, but once you're accustomed to perfect cleanliness, it's hard to go back

Yep, anything with sodium lauryl sulphate will dry out your hair/scalp. And like he/she said, the accompanying conditioner will normally have lanolin (wax) in it, which will cause build up, and prevent hair growth. There are plenty of shampoos without it, and actually most high-end products will not contain sodium lauryl sulphate.

Orlando Pita has his own hair care line, and works for Kerastase (we are both educators for the same company). I don't know where you got your information about him oiling instead of shampooing , but I'm quite sure he recommends his shampoos and conditioners ;)

Climate definitely plays a part in how often you wash your hair. Look at the effects of humidity/dryness on your skin. It does the same thing to your scalp. This is especially true for curly hair.

I feel the same way. I wash my hair everyday, and I could not go to bed without doing so.

Especially if you use any kind of product ie. leave in conditioner, curl cream, mousse, gel, wax, etc. You don't want that all over your pillow case, and then all over your face.
