The show was very crowded so it was difficult to take anything in. I think the general consensus was that the artists really played it safe with this one. There was a ton of collage/assemblage style stuff. Honestly I didn't look hard enough at anything last night so I'll need to return in order to assess it...

Re: What are you wearing today?

Dash Snow was featured in the last one. I can't begin to defend the marketing phenomenon that he has become but I'll credit his work for having more of a pulse than some of the prosaic conceptual stuff from last night. From my cursory jaunt through the place the two standouts were Jason Rhoades' installation on the ground floor (although it reminded me of a more ambitious work by Tom Sachs) and Matthew Brannon's on the third floor. There's clearly an emphasis on crudeness this time around (perhaps in reaction to the slick sculpture that's been flooding the art market) but this whole phase reminds me too much of that first wave of 1950s pseudo-Bohemian "installation art". And there was a conspicuous lack of paintings. If it was up to me they would have invited Hermann Nitsch to dangle an animal carcass in the lobby, etc.

Heading there this afternoon to preview. Hopefully less crowded.

no, that's john connelly the gallerist

the armory part of the exhibition (park+ 67th) was super cool, much more engaging the madison space.

I know they have that titanium digital breast plate in dark shadow. I heard that L'Eclaireur has it in black. Someone should skype them to see if it's still available.

btw, couldn't agree more re: the above comments on the biennial. what's amazing to me is that despite the attempted crudeness characterizing the prevailing aesthetic, the emotive impression of the art works was mostly non-existent. most of it felt so sterile.

couldn't agree more that someone/thing was needed to fill the nitsch niche.
