Re: What are you wearing today?

I was wearing Yohji and Comme in the late eighties and now I am mostly wearing Julis, Damir Doma, NN, Dior, Burberry Prorsum, Viridi-Anne etc. etc. The Internet has opened up the whole world whereas in the eighties it was largely what was available in your country.

[Y] for takin it back to all text WAYWTs...a reminder of times when online fashion boards were more innocent and fun. I remember when I first started posting WAYWTs all it was, was a list of everything i was wearing but the description for each item would be so complicated i'd make each piece like 2 lines long even if it was just a sweater or a basic jacket. Man, I don't think i dressed that well back then but doin that ritual on a daily basis was fun as hell, more so than taking pictures.

        [/quote]

Haha! Right on Matt. You know, I've been meaning to ask you. Your father used to wear Yohji right? If so, what does he wear now? Curious to know the evolution of a well dressed man in his latter years.

My dad used to wear along with Yohji, Comme, Issey, Armani, Versace, Jil Sander, Helmut Lang, Prada...but now he no longer gives a fuck, wears the same stuff all the time and it's usually not fashion shit, but more along the lines of golf wear mixed with some fashion staples...i'll buy him a few pieces in Japan and he usually ends up not wearing them. He's got a closet full of mint condition vintage Jil, Prada and what not and most of the stuff hasn't even been touched since it came home from the store. Usually he wears the same pair of Issey Miyake black double fabric wrinkled baggy pants, or some really old Helmut Lang chinos that are so beat they look stone washed, a t-shirt or basic shirt, and old ass helmut lang sneakers. He also wears banana republic khakis i got for him in japan...he does not have much interest in fashion any more, as he thinks most of it is complete crap. although we occasionally have conversations about recent happenings in the world of high end design.

But there is one thing about him that hasn't changed: He is obsessed with giving his input on styling me and my mother. Granted he's got a very good eye, the best i've ever seen even including so called professional stylists, but it gets annoying because he is very stubborn and adamant on his vision. He's the artist in the family, thus he has got a very set, almost narrow idea of what looks good, and i've had a few fights with him over that shit. It's toned down a bit recently though.

oh yeah...my favorite fashion story involving my dad: End of junior year of college he brings over a Helmut Lang cotton trench that he has worn for about a decade...it is old, so old that at one point it ripped. He was driving around the outskirts of Ann Arbor and noticed a drunk homeless dude carrying around a shopping cart. he came back and told me enthusiastically he had to give his coat to that guy because he felt bad for him. We ended up driving around lookin for the same guy, found him, he got off the car and told him to have the coat. What a great moment.

I wish my dad was interested in style.

For me it was kind of the opposite...there aren't any rules in our family, but one thing is you can't go out looking bad, and it's molded me into my image obsessed self of today. Without my parents i would not have developed any interest or knowledge on style and fashion, but it's a gift as well as a curse because when i see the world, often times style plays a big part about my impression of others. I won't judge their character, but there is a knee jerk reaction that the first thing i notice about someone is their style, how they wear their clothes, and it is something i study very obsessively even watching people who appear to not have the slightest interest in clothes. It's wrong for me to say this, but i kinda feel bad about people who have no style.

Glad you included the ass shot. I would have been wondering all day what the back of those jeans looked like without it....

I never thought a nasty purple/pink shirt and a pair of disgusting/overdesigned pair of jeans would make me throw up the moment I woke up.
