Fabric Resources

I've recently started to sew/create more seriously, and options for quality fabrics are very sparse in Chicago. Aside from those immediately obvious on google, do any of you know any sites that offer nice fabrics online? Hopefully, ones that allow you to order/borrow swatches as well. As much as i'd love to bring back a ton of stuff from New York every time I go there, it's not that feasible at the moment. Thanks!-

there are a few resources that i will post later, for ordering fabric online,

but i must say, one of the beauties of buying fabric, is to be able to touch and feel it in person, which is something you can hardly do with the small swatches they send you.



i will post a few listing, this evening, I also have a book call small companies guide to buying wholesale fabrics which is very handy, it has a ton of stores with little or no minumums for ordering, many of which you can call via the telephone to send you swatches......

Went to this little gem the other day. Fantastic yarns and handmade fabrics - if Harnden was based in NYC, that's probably where he'd get his stuff from. Pricey, but well worth it considering what we pay for clothes.

^ what a crazy coincidence. I came across them online just two days ago. Wish their images for the handmade fabrics are online. Like you said, pricey but really incredible materials. The silk wrapped stainless steel wire "yarn" is awesome.

The store layout is really nice and the feel of everything (from what I can see in photos) is really austere and beautiful.

Anybody know of any fabric stores the carry quality fabric in LA?

Mood is good, but you pay a little more for the convenience of having a lot of great fabric in one location. It's also kind of far from most other fabric places and their notions suck.

The fashion district has great stuff if you look, but because they're almost all jobbers working with new old stock it's hit and miss and you can't always expect any given place to have interesting fabric. It's a scavenger hunt. I bought twenty yards of some killer micromodal jersey at $3/yard and they threw in like three yards free on top of it. I don't remember which location this was but I usually get little gifts like that when I buy in any bulk.

What a coincidence I was just in Dwntwn looking for a supima cotton/micromodal blend but no luck. I do agree its either hit or miss, you definitely have to really hunt to find the goods.

A friend of mine has just put together her first collection & needs to source fabric suppliers & manufacturers in the Tri state area.
