Contrary to popular belief, cedar is not an effective deterrent for moths... One should dry clean all woolens/wovens/cashmere prior to spring and summer storage as moths are highly attracted to the dirt and oils from human skin... and the flakes of human skin in particular. Yes, gross, but no matter how clean, we all shed and degrease. Also, I was not aware of moth and larvae's leather fetish... Thought I would have learned that lesson by now, considering I rarely, if never, clean my leathers.
Enough intriguing things have piled up on this thread I figured I might as well lose my s-z forum cherry here as anywhere else.
First, the Alia alligator hide pieces in the past several pages were amazing. The seemingly unaltered draped hides feel like an idea that has been in the air and finally realized. I love how it looks exceedingly modern and primal- as if a shaman or hunter were draped for a ritual or hunt.
I'm still trying to decide on the repurposed belts- reusing is good but I can't swat the faint whiff of hippie crafts away. The flooring works a bit better- something about distance and not having belts in your face.
Finally, another weigh in on the moth issue. It makes sense that moths could eat the shearling in leather- after all it is wool. I would like to suggest that the larvae of something else- beetles- also eats animal protein- feathers, a dried beetle (it was on my shelf intentionally), etc. A sticky trap with a chemical clothes-moth lure should catch moths during their active cycle. A few days in the freezer for clothing, not leather should kill the larvae. I''m about ready to use my freezer as a closet for some of my favorites.
The Laundress makes good looking, rugged, supposedly moth proof garment bags. I've purchased two recently and am hoping for the best but I think any "food" may be too big a draw for almost any measure to work.
