Though I disagree with you about his older collections. If anything, they're pretty staid compared to the 'blades & fins' exaggerating a lot of his silhouettes the last few seasons. But then, that's runway collection, and runway is deliberately more in your face, more sculpture, more.. glamazon.
Pre-collection, on the other hand, is what gets into 90% of closets, generally unhyped on the runway. Simpler cuts; less show, more mileage. AKA his bread & butter. It's what arrives in stores about a month before runway collection appears, and it explains why those who cry about how they won't be buying anything "this season" because nothing in the show appealed to them still do. That, I consider the real paradox.
