edit: i should note that it was pretty much a baiting post anyways to draw attention to the fact. after watching youtube clips of people being shot at, run over with cars, etc. and knowing most folks are more concerned with the new x-men and hangover II movies and still bitching about us getting involved in libya, being crude feels a lot more appropriate

Speaking of riots, the situation in Athens got completely out of hand yesterday, with a group of no more than 200 people wearing masks causing chaos on an otherwise peaceful series of protests that has been going on for more than 20 days. Tear gas is seriously not cool, I don't think I've ever felt that bad physically before in my life.

I'm well aware of the fact that life will get much harder for the average greek, but to a great extent you brought this down on yourself, and not only that, cuts are your only option. I understand why the people are frustrated and even afraid of the future, but why protest when there is no real alternative anyway? What do you want to change?

Known politicians and others have stolen millions from the state, and everyone knows about it - yet nothing happens to them, ever, as the MP's themselves have created a series of laws to protect themselves, giving them immunity, thus allowing them to essentially do whatever the fuck they want. There's names, it is common knowledge that money goes straight into their pockets.

And then the crisis comes and they're trying to raise billions of euros by decreasing the minimum wage for everyone to 500 euro after taxes (in other words, thank god there's parents), stopping giving pensions to old people (now you get 70 year olds who have to start working again!!!!), etc.

To cut a long story short, imo, they're doing everything but trying to cure the real problems that plague Greece's economy, which is the big guys who do give close to NOTHING to the government. To give you an example, due to lobbying and bribing, private education institutions, casinos, newspapers/tv channels, even freaking shipowners (a lot of money there) pay less than 1% of their earnings on taxes.

Anyway, I only live in Greece during the summer these days, and to be honest, I don't know what's going to happen. Only one thing's for sure: soon the people who played by the rules and worked all their lives without exploiting their connections and bribing etc will take justice into their own hands, they deserve it after 30 years of this joke.
