Production on some yung lean tracks is cool and fun. The rapping is really forgettable. (I wouldn't use yung lean as a strong example, but I think older hip hop fans tend to be more critical of flow/lyrics whereas younger fans are generally more focussed on the instrumental).

To answer your question, yung lean is an incredibly accessible way for teenagers to join in on what's currently cool. Just buy a bucket hat, listen to ginseng strip a few times and drink Arizona tea and then you're in. It's a very short-living trend and they'll be absolutely gone in a year.

^ interesting. i don't normally go for stuff like this but this sounds legit.

when i sold my rap vinyl collection back in the mid-00s i was surprised how much the digable planets stuff fetched since they were very popular - borderline commercial - and their albums/singles were widely available. whereas i got 99 cents for my old apache records which i wish i had held on to. Their live shows are equally as interesting with afro picks and fist all up in the air.

I just got back from a Deltron 3030 and Nomadic Massive show and it was awesome! I love when hip hop artists play with live bands. Obviously it doesn't work for every artist, but the events are pretty cool when they do.

Weird. I thought most people wrote them off as one-hit wonder. He seems like a smart guy - isn't his father a professor?

RapRock was and is a tragic misstep.

as a genre or trend, yes. though its not impossible to combine the two (or make rock influenced rap)

POS makes has some good rock influenced tracks too since he does both genres.

Also, these don't technically count as its not original music, but I quite liked this mash up album:
