Yep, listening to that as well. I really like it! But I am a huge fan of Patrick anyway. Much better than "Magic Position" IMO.
As for now, I'ld say it's in a row with Lycanthropy and Wind In The Wires... but gotta give it some further listening.

My favorites that far (and tips for those who wanna check him out):
    The Bachelor
    Damaris

Also looking forward to the new Eels joint :)

i'm not surprised he was a d-bag. he was probably strung out out of his mind. however, he definitely had a knack for having songs that had great melodies and chord progressions. his arrangements for his later records were pretty fantastic imo.

I'm not a huge fan of Mr. Smith or anything (I do think he's got a knack, but I haven't listened to his stuff for I don't know how long)... that said, merz are you stating that your opinion comes from personal interaction with him? I could see that turning you off, but if it's just his rep as a jaggoff putting you off, wouldn't you agree that TONS of great music has been made by unsavory asses? My personal standard-bearer for this is probably Miles Davis, and jesus could Phil Spector do some crazy shit in the studio... but yeah, never would I want to meet either of those dudes. Blah, blah, blah...

Of course, E. Smith was a particular heart-on-sleeve type that I guess opens him up to this kinda targeting.

And I would never claim that you have to be consistent, either. I have trouble with Gram Parsons for similar reasons as you mentioned, so go figure...

Not criticizing, just bored at work...

i hung out with him for a weekend in college when i brought him to my uni for a show. touring him around myself for a weekend i felt i saw a glimpse of his personality...he was a really nice humble and grateful guy that day...

100% agreed... I've been listening to this so much. Wish mine came w/ the DVD. Still, it's my new collection-centerpiece for sure (until I luck acrosss some La Monte Young at a library sale or something, which it seems like everybody else does these days). Gold standard ish.

I'll be the trippel nipple in this instance. This means SZ owns at least nearly 1% of these, by my count. Are you guys VOD subscribers? I am not.

These days it's mostly Fever Ray (really cool music, very dark and weird), Patti Smith and Mussorgsky (as usual)

That's so great. So if we consider only the "publicly available" 200 copies, we're getting into significant ownership steez here.

Also... I've been wanting to ask if there's a music forum that someone could recommend specializing in exactly this kinda stuff. I think the Chrodritic Sound forum might focus a bit much on the str8 noise stuff, I'm looking for something a bit more expansive on the wyrd tuunes tip... just not sure what's out there.
