    Some good documentaries:

Unser täglich Brot (Our Daily Bread)
    The Thin Blue Line
    Salesman
Titicut Follies (if you can find it)

Also, anyone else seen Shutter Island? I saw it at a midnight showing a couple days ago and really enjoyed it. Far superior to The Departed. Scorsese channeling Hitchcock and Kubrick?

the trailer gave me some cape fear vibes, strangely...it looks like the most un-Marty movie Scorsese has ever made. I have trouble getting behind anything he's made after Bringing Out the Dead, probably the last film he did that had a strong effect on me other than simply being entertained.

Yes, it's a good and important movie, possibily necessary in showing that nazis, communists, terrorists etc are non-monstrous humans worthy of legal advocacy. In defence of humanity, this is an edifying deconstruction of morality. (I'm provocing myself writing it... That's why to see this film.)

Has Frederick Wiseman been forgotten or something? He's by far the most important American documentary maker, yet it's impossible to see most of his films outside of festival retrospectives.

His "Model" (1980) is the best film I've seen about fashion by the way.

Yeah, Shutter Island is definitely more of an exercise in Scorsese's technical mastery of film than anything else. I kinda feel bad for the guy....I mean, how do you possibly top Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas? Maybe filmgoers should just accept the fact that he's past his prime and allow his recent films to stand on there own.

Agreed, it's a damn shame that there's such limited access to his films. They weren't released on DVD until very recently (and only through his website) and unfortunately he won't be truly appreciated until he has passed on.

Just saw Hal Ashby's "Shampoo" (1975), which is fairly aimless in terms of story and character, but photographically it stands as a spellbinding portrait of sun and sex-soaked Beverly Hills at the end of the 60s and the start of Nixon. (***)

                      I would recommend:

                      Nuit et brouillard (1955)

Very intense but definitely must be seen.

                      Touching the Void (2003)

I enjoyed the mixture of reenactment with the interviews. Usually I do not appreciate reenactments in documentaries but this was handled beautifully.

I'm watching it right now, the interview with de Montebello is particularly telling.
