as Malick's filmography grows ever so slowly i find the narrative playing less and less of a role in the film for me. i enjoyed the narration in the thin red line and the overall detachment from the trivialities of war on all the different character because it helped tie together a theme in my head of him showing how even us almighty humans find ourselves having to submit to the rituals of mother nature, whether it be by blowing each others brains out and finding ourselves pulling teeth for trophies or camping out on the back side of hill for days on end waiting for reinforcements.
only saw the new world once so all i can hear is that booming soundtrack in my head when trying to think about it, but it was a really beautiful film. i like how he made the scenery and nature feel so intoxicating (using the music to his advantage here). it really captured that impulsiveness to keep going further and further into the unknown. felt it everytime i use to go backpacking/climbing in Colorado, i just couldn't stop going and wanting to climb every peak no matter the time of day.
tree of life certainly sounds dull, but i know Malick is capable of pulling it off if anyone can. was going to go download it now and put my new vaporizer to work, but my torrent site is down...damn.
