agreed....i think maybe they could have focused more on the isolation aspect in that stark white space, the tribal getups were a bit of a distraction. Decent video, but didn't like it as much as some of Kanye's other, more creative ones like Good Life or Flashing Lights.

If you didn't know the title of the song and you just heard the chorus you would have no idea what the fuck he's saying.

Basically the vocoder is used for those that can't sing.
..yet this is top of the charts.

It's not like he's trying to put one over on anyone, though - people know that he couldn't perform that song without autotune. It's at the top of the charts because it's an infectious pop song, not because people are wowed by Kanye's vocal talents. I don't mind it, maybe because it reminds me of listening to old Zapp & Roger songs as a kid.

The more I listen to it, I think this will end up being one of his better known songs - the sort of thing that will be on college kid playlists 15 years from now. Also - I can understand all of the lyrics, and I think they're actually pretty good, for what the song is.

i don't have much of a problem with the vocoder itself, as i enjoy its use in electronic/dance/etc. music

i have a question: why has it suddenly become the popular thing in hiphop/rap/etc. to use the vocoder? somehow i feel like they are over-using it...as if they have just discovered its existence
